Toothache Q & A

How is an abscess treated?

An abscess is an infection that can be deep inside the gum tissue or within the tooth itself. Treating the abscess involves removing as much of the infection as possible. If the infection has damaged your tooth beyond repair, Dr. Tran may have to extract it if it can't be repaired. If your tooth is pulled, she can drain the abscess and allow the infection to drain away.

A root canal is another option that Dr. Tran can use. With a root canal, the damaged area of the nerve is removed, along with any infection that may be present. If the infection is in the gum tissue itself, Dr. Tran may create an incision in the gum, allowing the infection to drain and the area to be treated.

What are common causes of toothache pain?

Cavities, abscesses, or cracks can cause toothaches. If you've broken a tooth in the past, had it repaired, and are experiencing pain in that same tooth, the dental work may be failing. Pain can also be caused by gum disease that has started to cause the gums to recede, exposing more of your tooth. The result may be a loose tooth that eventually falls out or breaks at the gum line.

Dr. Tran will evaluate your teeth to try and find the cause of your pain. Once she knows what is causing the toothache, she will be able to provide the appropriate treatment.

What are the best ways to prevent a toothache from occurring?

While some toothaches are hard to avoid, especially if a failed dental procedure causes them, there are several things you can do to reduce the risk of your teeth becoming damaged. With proper dental care, you can keep your teeth free of cavities and limit the potential for possible infection.

Dr. Tran can teach you the best ways to brush and floss your teeth to remove any debris and bacteria that may get caught between your teeth. She can advise you on which type of toothpaste is best and how often you should brush and floss your teeth.
